When Damilola* (28) met Fade*(28) during NYSC camp, she had no idea their friendship would eventually lead her to her husband. But after marrying Isaac*, the man Fade had introduced her to, Damilola discovered that they had both kept a major secret from her.

For Sunken Ships, Damilola shares how discovering her husband’s (OCD) after their wedding affected their marriage, why she felt betrayed by the friend who played matchmaker, and how the experience changed the way she approaches relationships.

How did you and Fade become friends?

We met at NYSC camp in 2018 and became friends almost immediately. She was a church girlie like me, and we got along well. Even after camp, when we were posted to different local governments, we stayed in touch. We talked regularly and were quite close.

At some point, she found out that I was single and open to meeting new people. She offered to introduce me to one of her single male friends, Isaac*.

Oh. And how did that go?

He was really sweet and charming. We hit it off after Fade introduced us, and soon we were talking on the phone almost every day. Things progressed naturally from there, and we started courting in 2019.

I liked how deliberate he was about his cleanliness. He was particular about washing his hands and keeping his things sparkling clean. He took his faith seriously, too, which was important to me in a partner.

I鈥檓 guessing the relationship was a smooth ride.

It was good. We dated for about a year and a half, and I didn’t have any major concerns.

The only thing I found a little unusual was that he never allowed me to visit his house. I knew where he lived, and had even been to the gate of his building, but I never went inside. I didn’t think too deeply about it at the time because we were abstaining from sex until marriage.

He proposed in 2021, and we began preparing for the wedding. That was when  I began noticing some strange things about him. He was very insistent on having a small ceremony and how certain things should be done.

On the wedding day, for instance, he seemed visibly distressed when he couldn’t recite Psalm 91 over his new shoes twice before wearing them.  I thought he was just being dramatic, but I didn’t realise his behaviour might point to something deeper.

What was the actual marriage like, considering these little things you鈥檇 noticed?

Isaac was difficult to live with. I realised that his need for things to be done a certain way went beyond being neat or particular. He had repetitive routines that he struggled to stop, and if something interrupted them, he鈥檇 become so anxious and panicked that he couldn鈥檛 sleep or sit still.

For example, cooking became one of our biggest problems. Whenever I used the gas cooker, Isaac wouldn鈥檛 take my word for it that I鈥檇 turned off the burners. He鈥檇 keep checking them and sometimes get out of bed in the middle of the night to check again. He said he was worried that a gas explosion could happen while we slept, but his constant checking kept me awake.

Eventually, I started buying food instead of cooking at home. It was frustrating, but I wanted to be able to sleep without being disturbed.

Did you try to talk to him about this?

Six months into our marriage, I became so frustrated that I begged him to explain why he behaved that way. That’s when he confessed that he had Obsessive-compulsive Disorder (OCD). He said he hadn’t told me while we were dating because he was afraid I wouldn’t marry him if I knew.

Suddenly, some of the things I鈥檇 noticed during our courtship made more sense. It was a lot to take in. These weren’t occasional habits, they were part of his everyday life, and I was struggling to adjust to them. I hadn鈥檛 known what living with him would involve because I hadn鈥檛 known about his condition before we married.

I didn鈥檛 feel like I鈥檇 had the opportunity to understand his condition or consider what living together would look like before making a commitment as important as marriage.

Did you speak to anyone about what was happening?

I was worried about what people would think, so I turned to Fade first. I wanted to talk to someone I trusted who wouldn鈥檛 judge me for feeling frustrated with Isaac.

Surprisingly, she admitted that she鈥檇 known about Isaac’s OCD all along. She said she hadn鈥檛 told me because she wasn鈥檛 sure I could handle it and didn鈥檛 want the information to change how I saw him. She thought he was a good guy.

I couldn鈥檛 believe it. This was someone I considered a close friend, yet she鈥檇 known something so significant about the man she was introducing me to and said nothing. I felt betrayed. I also felt foolish for trusting them both without questioning whether there was something I needed to know.

Did this affect your relationship with Fade, though?

I withdrew from her after that conversation. I couldn’t get past what had happened. I felt she should have told me, regardless of whether she thought I could handle it or not.

I should have had the information and been allowed to decide for myself whether I wanted to pursue the relationship.

What about Isaac? Did this affect your marriage too?

Yes, it did. I tried to make the marriage work, but living with his compulsions and routines became too difficult for me. I hadn鈥檛 expected marriage to be like that, and eventually, I realised I couldn鈥檛 continue.

I told my family about his OCD, and they supported my decision to leave. They agreed that Isaac and his family should have told me about his condition before the wedding so I could make an informed decision.

There was very little pushback from his family when I decided to leave. I moved back to my parents’ house in 2022, and our divorce was finalised in March 2026.

Has this experience changed how you approach relationships?

I still want to get married and settle down eventually, but I’m more cautious now. I want to take my time getting to know someone and make sure that we’re being honest with each other.

I understand that no marriage is perfect, but I believe there are certain things you should know about a person before deciding to spend your life with them. I don’t want to find myself in a situation where I’m discovering major secrets after I’ve made a big commitment.

Would you be open to reconciling with Fade?

No, she ruined whatever trust I had in her by keeping Isaac鈥檚 illness from me. I don鈥檛 want friends like that in my life.

Nigerians Share What It鈥檚 Like聽 Living in a Face-Me-I-Face-You House /ships/nigerians-share-what-its-like-living-in-a-face-me-i-face-you-house/ Thu, 29 Oct 2026 13:00:00 +0000 /?p=386883 Living in a face-me-I-face-you house means sharing more than a building with your neighbours. Between communal bathrooms, unreliable water supply, and insane landlords, privacy is a luxury. For some Nigerians, the experience also comes with enough compound drama to last a lifetime.

We asked Nigerians who have lived in face-me-I-face-you houses to share the most unbelievable things they witnessed. Here鈥檚 what they said.

鈥淲e had to go two weeks without water鈥 鈥 Kenchak*, 31, M

Water was a constant problem in our compound. Sometimes, we went days without it. Whenever power was restored and the landlord pumped water, everybody rushed to fill their buckets before it ran out.

One morning, I was in the bathroom using pure water sachets for a bootleg shower before school when I heard two women shouting at each other. One accused the other of jumping the queue and moving her bucket to the front before the other residents woke up.

I thought it was an ordinary quarrel until one woman started singing insulting Yoruba songs. Then they began dragging each other鈥檚 clothes and throwing buckets around. People had to come out of their rooms to separate them.

The funniest part was that the landlord eventually got fed up with their fighting and locked the tap.  He didn鈥檛 reopen it for two weeks. It was a crazy time.

鈥淪he poured palm oil on her cheating husband鈥 鈥 Kudirat*, 26, F

A man in our compound lived with his wife and two children. He was one of those adults who terrorised the kids in the compound all in the name of discipline.

He acted like a responsible husband, but everyone knew he was unemployed and brought another woman home whenever his wife went to her shop in the market.

One day, his wife came back from the shop in the middle of the day and caught him with the other woman. She poured palm oil on both of them and started screaming for everyone in the compound to come out and look at them. The man was so embarrassed that, for months afterwards, he couldn鈥檛 even shout at us for playing in the compound.

鈥淢y landlady used to give me unsolicited relationship advice鈥 鈥 Joseph, 26, M

My first apartment was in a compound where the landlady monitored everybody鈥檚 business. At first, I thought she was simply observant, then I realised she was repeating things she could only have overheard through our thin walls.

One day, after I鈥檇 just seen one of my casual partners off, she called me over and started advising me to be a 鈥済ood boy鈥.  She warned that the next time she heard that I brought another girl home, she would 鈥渟how me her red eye鈥. I was only 23 at the time, but I yelled at her and told her to stop poking her nose into my life and mind her business.

She never spoke to me again, but that didn鈥檛 stop her from making life so uncomfortable that I moved out within a year. I honestly don鈥檛 regret it, she should have saved that advice for her useless son that kept impregnating the whole neighbourhood.

鈥淢y neighbour鈥檚 generator scattered the whole compound鈥 鈥 Blessing*, 27, F

When I was a teenager, we had a neighbour whose I-better-pass-my-neighbour generator sounded like a danfo trying to start. She ran it almost every night, sometimes until 2 a.m. Whenever anybody complained, she would say that she had paid her rent and had the right to enjoy herself.

One night, a neighbour with a baby went to beg her to switch it off at midnight because the noise was keeping the child awake. Instead of apologising, the generator owner told her to rent a house in a gated estate if she wanted peace and quiet. The new mother got angry and poured a whole sachet of sugar into the generator鈥檚 fuel tank.

The owner came out screaming, and the two women started fighting. Other residents rushed in to separate them, but the damage was done; the generator had stopped working. The landlord had to call a compound meeting the following morning to settle the matter.

Eventually, the generator lady moved out because she said the compound was full of jealous people who couldn鈥檛 stand her success.

鈥淭he paraga woman he owed disgraced him in front of the whole compound鈥 鈥 Femi*, 30, M

There was a man in our compound who dressed like he was going for a job interview, even when he was just stepping out to buy bread. He carried himself like he was better than the rest of us, so nobody really liked him.

One afternoon, the woman who sold paraga, agbo and local drinks at the junction showed up with her giant bowl and declared she would start selling her wares in front of his room. Apparently, he bought drinks on credit and promised to pay her back, but he鈥檇 been avoiding her for weeks.

She started shouting and advertising her drinks. The landlord tried to persuade her to move outside, but she refused to leave without her money. When he finally came out, he tried to play it cool, but she didn鈥檛 let him.

She mocked him for always dressing like a big man when he couldn鈥檛 even pay for the drinks he consumed. People started laughing, and he got so embarrassed that he went inside to bring part of the money. After that day, he started greeting people in the compound. I think the shame humbled him small.

Sunken Ships: My Friend Used Our Business Savings to Fund His Relationship /ships/friend-used-business-savings-fund-relationship/ Sun, 25 Oct 2026 12:22:17 +0000 /?p=386798 Sunken Ships is a 糖心原创 weekly series that explores the how and why of the end of all relationships 鈥 familial, romantic or just good old friendships.

When James* (37) got a new roommate, Seun (38), in 2013, he didn’t expect they’d become close friends, let alone business partners. But after trusting Seun to keep their business savings safe, James discovered that his friend had been using the money to fund his relationship.

For Sunken Ships, James shares how the betrayal affected him and how it has shaped the way he sees friendships.

Savings

How did you and Seun become friends?

Seun moved in with me in 2013 after a mutual friend introduced us. I wanted a flatmate to split the rent with, and we hit it off almost immediately. I found that he was a really cool guy.

What was the friendship like?

It was great. We鈥檇 gist every day, and hang out over drinks during the weekends.

Seun was a good listener who gave solid advice, so I started seeing him as an older brother. He was easy to talk to, and we鈥檇 discuss everything from money to the kind of life we wanted for ourselves.

That closeness made going into business together feel natural. I wasn鈥檛 partnering with a stranger. I thought I knew him well enough to trust him, and I believed we understood each other.

Cool. What business plans did you have?

We wanted to start a supply business together. It would鈥檝e been my first business idea since graduating school, and I was excited. I imagined us becoming one of those fierce investment duos who did big things together.

Neither of us had enough money to start, so we agreed to save for a few months before buying the things we needed. I didn鈥檛 want to get tempted to spend my share, so I suggested that Seun keep the money. Every month, as soon as I got paid, I sent the money to Seun for safekeeping. For the first few months, everything went smoothly.

So what changed?

Seun started dating Diana in 2014. I had no issues with her, but I noticed that he seemed to be spending more money. He bought her gifts, including perfume and wigs, and took her out regularly.

I didn鈥檛 expect him to be stingy with his girlfriend, but I knew we were supposed to be saving aggressively. I couldn鈥檛 understand how he suddenly had so much money to spend.

Did you suspect he was taking money from your savings?

Yes. The gifts that tipped me off, so I asked him if he was taking money from our savings. He denied it and said he was getting extra cash from side gigs. I then asked how much we had in the bank, but he dodged the question. That was when I knew something was wrong.

How did you find out what was really happening?

I kept pressing until he admitted that he鈥檇 been taking money from our savings to buy gifts and take his babe out.  He said he wanted to impress her and keep her interested in him.

I was angry. He鈥檇 made decisions with money that wasn’t his alone to spend, and worse, he hadn’t been upfront about it. If he had come to me and explained that he was having financial difficulties, we could at least have had a conversation. Instead, I found out that the money we were saving together was funding his relationship

What did you do after he confessed?

I told him I was no longer interested in the business and demanded my money back. By then, I’d contributed about 鈧450K.

Seun kept refusing, insisting that he鈥檇 return what he鈥檇 taken and we could continue our business plans. I wasn鈥檛 interested in continuing the business, though. I just wanted my money back.

Eventually, things escalated, and we started fighting. Our neighbours had to intervene and separate us. After that, he left our apartment and went to stay with his girlfriend.

Did you eventually get your money back?

Thankfully, I did. Seun came back to our place with his aunt, who helped us agree on a monthly repayment plan. He paid me back over the next six months, and by the end of 2015, he had moved out completely.

I agreed to the arrangement because I didn’t want to lose my money, but the fight had already ended our friendship.

I regret trusting him with something so important without putting proper safeguards in place. I thought our friendship was enough to make us accountable to each other, but it wasn’t.

It’s difficult to look at someone the same way after something like this happens.

Did this experience change how you approach friendships?

Definitely. I don’t believe in mixing business with friendship anymore. I used to think being friends with someone meant you could trust them. Now, I know that being close to someone doesn’t automatically mean you’ll share the same values, especially when money is involved.

If I ever go into business with someone again, I want everything clearly documented and a proper structure.

Would you reconcile with Seun if you had the chance?

I鈥檒l pass. There鈥檚 no way I can respect him the way I once did, so we鈥檙e better off staying in our separate lanes.

Nigerians Share What It鈥檚 Like Schooling With Kids of the Super Rich /ships/nigerians-school-with-super-rich/ Thu, 22 Oct 2026 11:59:44 +0000 /?p=386514 Money can get you a lot of things in Nigeria, but what happens when it follows you into the classroom? For some students, having wealthy or influential parents meant getting away with things other students would have been punished for. Others attended schools where family names and connections counted for nothing.

In this story, five Nigerians who went to school with children of the ultra-rich revisit their past and tell us what that experience felt like.

鈥淭hey got away with everything鈥 鈥 Chinasa*, 35, F

I attended an all-girls Catholic missionary school in the heart of Garki, Abuja. Many of the students came from wealthy families, including those whose parents were politicians and ambassadors, and many people wanted to be close to them.

Their parents often donated large sums to the school, so the matrons and seniors seemed reluctant to discipline them. No matter how grave the offence, they were rarely punished.

I remember one incident where a senior beat a junior girl on the neck, leading to complications. The junior girl died a few months later, but the senior was never punished. Whenever things got out of control, their parents would just pull them out of the school.

Many of the rich secondary school bullies I know have moved abroad and settled down. Things always seem to work out for people like that.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know how bad it was until I graduated鈥 鈥擝iola*, 29, F

My secondary school was exclusive and expensive, so most students had some level of wealth and access. We were all used to a certain lifestyle, and I didn鈥檛 think much of it at the time.

We disrespected our teachers a lot because we knew the punishment would always be detention. We got away with breaking a lot of rules because we had the means to bribe the house masters and mistresses. I didn鈥檛 realise how bad that culture was until I graduated and started my undergrad in Nigeria. I had to unlearn a lot of habits to avoid getting into trouble.

The only good part was that crimes like bullying were frowned upon. The chances that the person being bullied was also well-connected were quite high, so the school took zero chances. Bullies got suspended or expelled.

That school opened my mind to a new world of possibilities and instilled in me a sense of boldness and audacity. Wealthy people do not teach their kids consideration. Everything on the table is up for grabs.

鈥淭hey treated all of us the exact same way鈥 鈥 Osinachi*, 25, F

I attended a missionary school that mostly catered to boujee kids, although you wouldn鈥檛 have guessed it from the outside. The school treated all of us equally and enforced a strict dress code. You couldn鈥檛 tell the difference between the kids of top government officials and regular traders. We all wore the same low-cut hair and ate the same crappy food.

Sometimes a parent would try to force the school鈥檚 hand to get special treatment, and our principal would say, 鈥淚f you don鈥檛 like what we do here, you can take your child and leave.鈥

Outside school, the difference in our lifestyles was obvious. I love that the school never allowed gadgets or mufti within the premises. It would have led to bullying and unnecessary competition.

鈥淪omeone snuck out of school to meet a sex worker鈥 鈥 Joseph*, 29, M

I attended a Catholic school in Edo State, where favouritism was more about academic performance than about wealth or family connections. The smart students were given preferential treatment, while those who fell behind rarely got any perks.

One of the most outrageous things I witnessed was a 鈥渟pecial鈥 student sneaking out of the hostel in the middle of the night to patronise sex workers. He got away with it, but students knew they risked expulsion if they tried the same thing. Even when these favoured students brought contraband to school, their parents got them out of trouble.

I liked my experience at the school, though. It opened my mind to new possibilities and made me feel less guilty about what I wanted in life.

Na Me F鈥擴p?: I Refused to Recommend My Brother for a Job /ships/refused-recommend-brother-for-job/ Wed, 21 Oct 2026 16:11:28 +0000 /?p=386454 Sometimes, life puts you in messy situations where you鈥檙e not sure if you鈥檙e doing the right thing or not. That鈥檚 what Na Me F鈥 Up? is about 鈥 real Nigerians sharing the choices they鈥檝e made, while you decide if they fucked up or not.

When Mary* (28) refused to recommend her older brother for jobs, he accused her of wanting him to fail. But after a previous bad experience left her apologising to a client on his behalf, she wasn鈥檛 willing to risk her professional reputation for him.

At the end of this story, you鈥檒l get to decide: did she fuck up or not?

This is Mary鈥檚 dilemma as told to Betty:

Growing up, I always felt like I had to work twice as hard as my older brother.

He鈥檚 talented and creative, but he鈥檚 never been particularly ambitious. He takes life as it comes and spends months talking about an idea without doing much to bring it to life. Somehow, no one ever seems to mind. I didn鈥檛 get that kind of patience.

When I failed JSS2 and had to repeat classes, my parents treated me like I鈥檇 committed a crime. They were disappointed, and they never let me forget it. After that incident, I felt like I had something to prove. I became very conscious of my grades, my choices and how I presented myself. I wanted to be the child my parents couldn鈥檛 find fault with.

That pressure followed me into adulthood. By the time I finished university and started working, I鈥檇 become someone who takes responsibilities seriously. I plan ahead, meet deadlines and stay intentional about the opportunities I pursue. I don鈥檛 have everything figured out, but I鈥檝e worked hard to build a PR career I鈥檓 proud of.

My brother, on the other hand, is still trying to find his footing. He鈥檚 a designer with genuine talent, but his work ethic is questionable. He can be disorganised, difficult to reach and unreliable with deadlines. He鈥檒l agree to do a job, disappear for days and return with an excuse.

I know all of this because I鈥檝e experienced it firsthand.

During my service year, I recommended him to a friend who needed someone to design and print packaging for her business. I thought it was a good way to support my blood. They agreed on the scope of the work and a deadline, so I expected things to go smoothly.

Instead, my friend struggled to get updates from him. He鈥檇 take hours to reply to her messages or ignore them altogether. The deadline passed without delivery, and when he eventually delivered the work, it was late. My friend was understandably upset, and聽 I had to apologise to her personally.聽

I was frustrated, but I didn鈥檛 want one bad experience to become a bigger issue between my brother and me. I told him what needed to improve; he apologised, and I moved on. I didn鈥檛, however,聽 recommend him for other jobs, even though my work brings me in contact with some big names.

Recently, he told me he needed more clients. He wanted me to share his portfolio and recommend him whenever I came across suitable opportunities.

I agreed, but I soon started wondering what would happen if I actually recommended him to someone.

These weren鈥檛 random people on the internet. They were people I knew, people I might have to work with again, and people whose opinions of me mattered professionally. If I recommended my brother and he delivered late or gave them a frustrating experience, it wouldn鈥檛 just be his reputation on the line. He was my brother, but I couldn鈥檛 vouch for his reliability, so I kept the portfolio to myself. Whenever he asked if I鈥檇 sent it to anyone, I told him no one had gotten back to me.

A few weeks later, he found out that I鈥檇 been asking around for a graphic designer and asked me why I hadn鈥檛 come to him. I tried to explain that he was the right fit for that particular job, but he wasn鈥檛 having it. He asked whether I鈥檇 even shared his portfolio with anyone. When I admitted that I hadn鈥檛, he got angry.

He claimed that I didn鈥檛 want him to succeed. He also said that I was comfortable watching him struggle while I enjoyed the benefits of having a good job. He reminded me that he鈥檚 my older brother and that family was supposed to help each other.

That last part annoyed me because I鈥檝e never refused to help him. I just don鈥檛 think helping someone means blindly recommending them for work they can’t handle.

I reminded him of what happened with my friend鈥檚 business. I explained that I needed to see some improvements in his work ethic before I could recommend him again. I just wanted him to take his work seriously.

He argued that I was judging him based on one bad experience and insisted he鈥檇 improved since then. Maybe he has, but I haven鈥檛 seen enough evidence to make me comfortable staking my professional reputation on that claim.

Now, what started as a disagreement between us has become a family issue.

My parents think I should have been honest from the beginning instead of making excuses. They agree that I shouldn鈥檛 lie, but they also think I could have done more to help him. My mum, in particular, feels that I鈥檓 being too hard on him. She keeps reminding me how difficult it can be to establish oneself in a career.

My friends see it differently. They think I did the right thing. If I鈥檇 recommended him and he disappointed the client, nobody would care that he was my brother. They would only remember that I recommended him.

It鈥檚 been several months, and my brother is still upset with me. Part of me wonders whether I鈥檓 holding him to a higher standard because I鈥檝e spent my whole life feeling like I had to work harder than he did. Maybe I鈥檓 also being unfair because I don鈥檛 want to feel responsible if he messes up.

But another part of me thinks that if he wants people to take him seriously as a professional, he needs to give them a reason to trust him.

Sunken Ships: I Rejected My Best Friend, and Now We鈥檙e Strangers /ships/rejected-best-friend-now-strangers/ Sun, 18 Oct 2026 12:00:00 +0000 /?p=386218 Sunken Ships is a 糖心原创 weekly series that explores the how and why of the end of all relationships 鈥 familial, romantic or just good old friendships.

When Cecilia* (28) met Kunmi* (32) at her first job in 2019, she had no idea he would become one of the most important people in her life. But in May 2025, Kunmi confessed that he wanted more than friendship. Cecilia didn鈥檛 feel the same way, and their once-close friendship began to unravel.

For this week鈥檚 Sunken Ships, Cecilia shares how rejecting her best friend changed their relationship and why she鈥檚 struggling to accept that someone who once felt like home might no longer be in her life.

How did you and Kunmi become friends?

We met at my first job in 2019. I was an assistant to a radio host, and he worked as a sound engineer at the company. I was the only other person at the office who watched anime, so we bonded over some of our favourite shows and became close.

We walked to the bus stop together after work every day, and soon, our coworkers started calling us besties. It felt true, so we didn鈥檛 fight it.

That鈥檚 cute. What was your friendship like?

It was such a safe place. I felt like I could talk to him about anything. I saw him as an older brother, and went to him for career or relationship advice. He also came to me whenever anything was bothering him about his family or his relationships.

At first,  he was just my work bestie, but over time, I realised he was the person I felt most comfortable around.

When did things start to change?

Early last year, I鈥檇 just come out of a relationship because my ex had japa-ed to Europe. I told Kunmi how heartbroken I was and swore off dating. He joked that I deserved a loverboy like him and said I should give myself time to heal.

At first, I didn鈥檛 think anything of it. We鈥檇 always talked about our relationships, so I assumed he was being his usual self. But after that, he started making comments about how he鈥檇 never leave me to figure things out alone if we dated. I laughed because I thought he was just trying to cheer me up. I didn鈥檛 realise he was serious.

And when did you realise Kunmi had feelings for you?

He confessed in May 2025. We were talking one evening when he asked if I鈥檇 ever considered dating someone who already knew me very well.

When I asked what he meant, he said he鈥檇 liked me for a long time, and he felt we鈥檇 be good together because we already understood each other.

I was shocked. We were close, but I had never looked at him in that way. He was my closest friend, almost like family. The thought of dating him had genuinely never crossed my mind.

How did you respond?

I told him I cared about him deeply, but didn鈥檛 have romantic feelings for him. I鈥檇 also just come out of a relationship and wasn鈥檛 interested in dating anybody. I was still trying to get over my ex, and the last thing I wanted was to jump into something new.聽

I explained how I valued our friendship and hoped we could continue being friends. He said he understood, and the conversation ended without any argument. I even gave myself a pat on the back because I thought we鈥檇 handled it like adults.

Right. Did things change after that conversation?

Not immediately, but I started noticing little things. He stopped calling as often and became less interested in the random conversations we used to have. Before, he鈥檇 call just to tell me something funny that happened at work. Suddenly, I was the one initiating almost every conversation.

Whenever  I asked if anything was wrong, he鈥檇 say he was fine or had been busy. I tried not to read too much into it because I knew he might need time to process his feelings.

Still,  the difference was hard to ignore. We鈥檇 spent years being comfortable around each other, and now I felt like I had to think carefully about every interaction.

Did you bring this up with him?

Yes. I asked if my rejection had affected our friendship, and he insisted that everything was fine.

I started wondering if I had done something wrong by being honest with him.

Did you ever consider dating him to save the friendship?

Honestly, no. He鈥檚 a good person, and I know he cares about me. But someone being good to you doesn鈥檛 automatically mean you should date them.

Even if I鈥檇 been ready for another relationship, I would still have needed to genuinely want him romantically. I couldn’t manufacture those feelings just to keep our friendship intact.

Sometimes I wonder whether things would have been different if I had been in a better emotional place. But I remind myself that I didn’t reject him only because of my breakup. I simply didn’t see him that way.

What hurts most about the way things have changed?

We didn’t have a big fight. It just feels like I lost him because I couldn’t give him what he wanted.

I don鈥檛 blame him for needing space. Rejection can hurt, and I understand that he might need time to move on from his feelings. But I wish we could have found a way to navigate it without losing what we had.

Do you think your friendship can recover?

We鈥檙e still cordial, but I wouldn鈥檛 call us best friends. We don鈥檛 talk as often, and I rarely know what鈥檚 going on in his life.

Part of me still expects things to go back to normal, especially because we were friends for years before this happened. But I know I can’t make that decision for him. If he needs distance to move on from his feelings, I have to respect that.

I just wish he鈥檇 tell me honestly if he can’t be my friend anymore. It would hurt, but at least I’d know where we stand instead of wondering if I’ve lost him for good.

I鈥檓 sorry. What has this experience taught you about friendship and love?

Sometimes, caring about someone means accepting that the relationship you want with them isn’t the one they want with you.

What about your dating life? Are you seeing anyone now?

I鈥檝e only been seeing people casually since my last relationship ended. I still don鈥檛 think I鈥檓 ready for another romantic connection.

Good morning, my love, and please remember to take care of yourself too.
  • Good morning, my queen. If I could plan the perfect day for you, it would begin with breakfast in bed, your favourite flowers and absolutely nothing to worry about. Until I can make that happen, I hope this message reminds you that spoiling you will always be one of my favourite things to do.
  • My darling wife, I sometimes think about how different my life would have been if our paths had never crossed. • Good morning, darling. I hope you know that my love for you isn’t dependent on how productive you are or how much you accomplish. • Good morning, my love. I woke up thinking about all the little things you do that make our marriage special, from remembering how I like my food to checking on me when I’ve had a stressful day. • My darling wife, if I could give you one thing today, it would be a morning completely free from worry. I know there are responsibilities waiting for you and a hundred things competing for your attention, but I hope you find time to enjoy yourself too. Good morning, beautiful, and don’t forget how much I love you.
  • Good morning, sweetheart. I love that after all this time, we still have new things to learn about each other, and there are new memories waiting to be made. There are places I want us to visit, experiences I want us to share and countless ordinary evenings I look forward to spending with you. Growing older doesn’t scare me when I know I’ll have my favourite person by my side. Here’s to another beautiful day of doing life together.
  • My beautiful wife, I know I sometimes get caught up in work and forget to tell you how much I appreciate everything you do. I see the effort you put into our home, our relationship and the people you care about, and none of it goes unnoticed. I want to celebrate you for the incredible woman you are, not just for the things you do for others. Good morning, my love, and thank you for making our lives so beautiful.
  • Good morning, my sunshine. If today doesn’t go exactly as you planned, please don’t be too hard on yourself. One difficult moment doesn’t erase your progress, and one disappointing day doesn’t mean better things aren’t coming. Take everything one step at a time, knowing that I’ll be here to listen, encourage you and remind you how amazing you are.
  • My darling, I still remember the excitement of getting to know you and discovering all the little things that made you special. I loved hearing your stories, learning about your dreams and finding excuses to spend more time with you. Now that you’re my wife, I get to experience those beautiful parts of you every day, and it still feels like a privilege. Good morning, babe you have captured my heart.
  • Good morning, my precious wife. I hope you never doubt how much your happiness matters to me, because seeing you happy is one of the greatest joys of my life. I want to support your ambitions, encourage your interests and help create a life where you feel free to pursue everything you love. Your dreams will always have a place in our marriage, and I’ll never stop believing in you.
  • My love, there are mornings when I wake up before you and spend a few minutes simply appreciating the wonderful life we share. The world outside might be noisy and unpredictable, but being close to you makes everything feel a little calmer. I love knowing that whatever the day brings, we’ll eventually find our way back to each other. Good morning, darling, and thank you for being my favourite place to return to.
  • Good morning, beautiful. I know marriage requires effort, patience and understanding, and I’m grateful that we keep choosing to work through life’s challenges together. We may not always agree on everything, but I love that we’re learning how to become better partners every day. Every lesson we’ve learned has helped us build something stronger, and I’m excited about everything still ahead of us.
  • Good morning, my darling. One of the things I love most about our marriage is how comfortable I feel being completely myself around you. I can share my biggest dreams, admit my fears and laugh at the silliest things without worrying about being judged. You’ve given me a kind of companionship I never want to take for granted. I hope you always feel that same freedom and security with me.
  • My beautiful wife, I hope today brings you closer to something you’ve been hoping and working towards. I’ve seen how much effort you’ve invested in your goals, and I know there are moments when progress feels slower than you’d like. Please don’t lose sight of how far you’ve already come or how much potential you still have. Good morning, sweetheart, and remember that I’ll always be proud of you.
  • Good morning, my love. If there’s one thing I want us to keep doing throughout our marriage, it’s finding reasons to celebrate each other. I never want us to become so familiar that we forget to say thank you, give compliments or plan little surprises. I hope I never stop making you feel like the most special woman in the world.
  • My darling wife, I love the beautiful life we’re creating, but I also love dreaming about everything we haven’t experienced yet. I imagine us taking spontaneous trips, discovering new favourite restaurants and creating the stories we’ll eventually tell our children about. There’s so much I still want to see and do with you, and the thought of sharing those adventures makes me excited about the future. Good morning, baby, and here’s to all the memories waiting for us.
  • Good morning, sweetheart. I hope you start today remembering that you don’t have to carry every responsibility by yourself. We’re partners, and that means sharing the difficult moments just as much as we share the happy ones. If there’s anything weighing on your mind, I want you to feel comfortable telling me so we can figure it out together. Your peace matters to me, and I never want you to feel alone.
  • My love, sometimes I wish there were enough words to explain how much you’ve changed my life. You’ve taught me to be more patient, to appreciate the small things and to understand that happiness often comes from the people we share our days with. I love the person I’m becoming because of the life we’re building together. Good morning, my beautiful wife, and thank you for helping me grow.
  • Good morning, my queen. I hope you find something today that makes you laugh until your cheeks hurt. Life can be so serious, and I never want you to forget how much joy you deserve. I hope your day is filled with little pleasures. I’ll be looking forward to hearing all about it later.
  • My darling wife, there are so many things I admire about you, but your ability to care deeply for the people you love will always be one of my favourites. You remember the little details, notice when someone needs encouragement and find thoughtful ways to make others feel special. I hope you know that you deserve to receive that same tenderness and attention. Good morning, sweetheart, and let me be the first person to remind you how wonderful you are.
  • Good morning, my heart. I know there will be seasons when life feels easy and others when we have to work a little harder to find our rhythm. Through all of them, I want us to keep communicating, making time for each other and remembering why we fell in love. Our marriage means too much to me to let the everyday pressures of life steal the joy we share. I love you, and I’ll always keep choosing us.
  • Good morning, my love. I didn’t marry you expecting you to remain exactly the same person forever, and I look forward to loving every new version of you. Whatever dreams you develop or adventures you decide to pursue, I want to be there encouraging you. Watching you become everything you’re meant to be is a beautiful privilege.
  • My darling wife, if we ever find ourselves having a difficult day, I hope we always remember that we’re on the same team. No disagreement is worth making you feel unloved or unimportant. I want our home to be a place where we can apologise, forgive each other and find our way back to laughter. Good morning, sweetheart, and thank you for continuing to build this life with me.
  • Good morning, my baby. When I imagine the years ahead, I see us growing older, making new traditions and finding happiness in things we haven’t even discovered yet. More than anything, I hope you always wake up knowing that being your husband is one of the greatest honours of my life. I love you.

  • Good morning, my queen. Don’t underestimate the power of being consistent with the little things that matter to you. Keep building the habits that support the future you want.
  • Sweetheart, I hope you wake up today knowing that you don’t need anyone’s permission to pursue a life that makes you happy. Good morning, my amazing wife.
  • Good morning, my love. If you’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to begin something important, consider this your reminder that progress often starts before we feel completely ready. You can learn as you go, make adjustments and become more confident with every step. Don’t let perfectionism keep you from discovering what you’re capable of.
  • My darling wife, I know the world can sometimes make you feel like you should be doing more, earning more or achieving everything at once. Good morning, darling, and please be gentle with yourself today.
  • Good morning, sweetheart. I hope you never allow someone else’s doubts to become the limits you place on yourself. Trust the work you’re putting in and let your progress speak for itself. I know I trust you and your vision.
  • My love, every morning is a chance to make choices that bring you closer to the person you want to become. Good morning, beautiful.
  • Good morning, my heart. Sometimes, the most courageous thing you can do is admit that something isn’t working and choose a different direction. • Sweetheart, I want you to remember that your future is bigger than any disappointment you’ve experienced. There are people you haven’t met, opportunities you haven’t discovered and achievements you haven’t even imagined yet. Keep believing that beautiful things are possible while doing your part to make them happen. Good morning, my love.
  • Good morning, my beautiful wife. I hope you never lose the determination that makes you pursue your goals, even when the journey becomes challenging. Your willingness to keep learning and trying is something I deeply admire. Whatever milestone you’re working towards, know that I’ll celebrate every step of your progress with you.
  • My darling, today I want you to make room for joy alongside all your responsibilities and ambitions. You deserve to enjoy the present instead of postponing your happiness until you’ve achieved everything on your list. Laugh with your friends, savour your favourite meal and appreciate how much beauty already exists in your life. Good morning, sweetheart.
  • Good morning, my extraordinary wife. As you step into this new day, I hope you remember that your story is still unfolding and some of your most beautiful chapters are ahead of you. Good Morning Messages for My Wife in a Long-Distance Marriage

鈥淲hat鈥檚 a good morning message for my wife that鈥檒l make her feel close, even when we鈥檙e miles apart?鈥 These messages will remind her how much you miss her and help keep the romance alive until you鈥檙e reunited.

  • Good morning, my beautiful wife. I woke up reaching for your side of the bed before remembering that you’re miles away. I miss your warmth, your sleepy smile and the little conversations we used to have before getting out of bed. I can’t wait for the morning when I open my eyes and find you right beside me again.
  • My darling, I wish I could teleport to wherever you are right now, wrap my arms around you and kiss your forehead before you start your day. Since technology hasn’t figured that out yet, I’ll settle for sending you all my love through this message. Good morning, sweetheart, and remember that I鈥檓 counting down the days until I see you again.
  • Good morning, my love. The hardest part of being apart isn’t always the big occasions we miss but the ordinary moments we no longer get to share. I miss making breakfast with you, hearing you laugh from the other room and watching you get ready for the day. Those little things mean so much more to me now. I miss you and can鈥檛 wait to be back with you.
  • Rise and shine, my queen. Even though we’re waking up in different places, I hope you know that you’re still the first person I think about every morning. No amount of distance could ever change how much I love you or how grateful I am to be yours. Have a beautiful day, darling.
  • Good morning, baby. I checked my phone as soon as I woke up, hoping to see a message from you, and realised just how much our little conversations have become part of my daily routine. Hearing about your plans, your funny experiences and even your complaints makes me feel closer to you. I hope we get to talk properly later because I already have so much to tell you.
  • My beautiful wife, I wish I could surprise you with breakfast in bed instead of another good morning text. I’d make your favourite meal, bring it to you with a kiss and spend the morning listening to you talk about everything on your mind. Until we’re together again, please know that I’m saving up all those little romantic gestures for you. Good morning, sweetheart.
  • Good morning, my heart. Sometimes, I look at our pictures and smile because they remind me of all the beautiful moments we’ve shared. Then I start imagining the new memories we’ll make when we’re finally in the same place again. I hope that day comes sooner than we expect because I miss you more than words can explain.
  • Sweetheart, I know this distance hasn’t been easy on either of us, and I appreciate every effort you make to keep us connected. From our late-night calls to the random messages you send during the day, every little gesture reminds me how lucky I am to have you. Good morning, my darling wife, and thank you for continuing to make our marriage a priority.
  • Good morning, my sunshine. I wish I could see your face light up when you read this message instead of having to imagine it. Your smile is one of my favourite things in the world, and I miss being close enough to see it whenever I want. Please send me a picture when you get the chance so I can admire my beautiful wife.
  • My darling wife, being apart has made me appreciate the simplest things about our life together. I miss hearing your footsteps around the house, sharing meals at the same table and falling asleep together. I never imagined I’d miss those ordinary moments quite this much. Good morning, my love, and I can’t wait until we鈥檙e together again.
  • Good morning, beautiful. I hope you slept peacefully and woke up feeling loved, even though I couldn’t be there to hold you through the night. If I had my way, I’d spend the next few hours cuddling you and refusing to let you leave the bed. For now, I’ll have to settle for imagining being with you again.
  • My love, I know we’re living in different places right now, but I still think of us as a team in everything we do. Your worries are my worries, your victories are my victories and your happiness will always matter to me. Whatever today brings, remember that you have a husband who’s only one phone call away. Good morning, sweetheart.
  • Good morning, my queen. I woke up thinking about the last time we were together and how quickly those precious days seemed to pass. If I’d known how much I’d miss you, I would have held you a little longer and stolen a few more kisses. The next time I see you, don’t expect me to let go so easily.
  • Sweetheart, I wish we could skip all the travelling, waiting and counting down and go straight to the part where we’re together again. I miss your hugs, your laughter and the comfort of simply knowing you’re nearby. Until that happens, I’ll keep finding little ways to remind you how much you mean to me. Good morning, my beautiful wife.
  • Good morning, darling. I hope you know how proud I am of the way you’re handling everything while we’re apart. I see how hard you’re working and how much effort you’re putting into making this season of our lives worthwhile. I wish I could be there to support you in person, but please never doubt that I’m cheering you on from here.
  • My beautiful wife, sometimes I find myself thinking about what we’d be doing if we were together this morning. Maybe we’d be arguing playfully about who should make breakfast or deciding whether to spend a few more minutes in bed. It’s funny how even those silly little moments have become things I look forward to experiencing again. Good morning, baby, and I miss you.
  • Good morning, my forever love. I know the miles between us can make some days feel longer than others, but I never want you to question where my heart belongs. You’re still the woman I want to tell my good news to first and the person I wish I could come home to every evening. Nothing about that has changed.
  • My darling, I wish I could hold your hand as we walk through the day together instead of hearing about everything over the phone. I miss being able to look at you when you tell me a story and watching your expressions change as you get excited. Our calls mean the world to me, but they can never replace having you right here. Good morning, sweetheart. I鈥檓 counting the days until I come home.
  • Good morning, my love. I hope today brings you good news and little moments that make you forget how much you miss me. And whenever the loneliness creeps in, remember that I’m feeling the same way and looking forward to our next reunion. We’re getting through this together, one day at a time.
  • Sweetheart, I never thought I’d become someone who gets excited about video calls, but here we are. Seeing your face on my screen has become one of the highlights of my day, even when we’re both too tired to say much. I love that we can still find comfort in each other’s company from miles away. Good morning, my darling wife.
  • Good morning, beautiful. I wish I could send you more than words today because you deserve warm hugs, forehead kisses and someone to make you breakfast. If I were there, I’d happily spend the entire morning spoiling you. Until then, please accept this message as a little reminder that you’re constantly on my mind.
  • My precious wife, I know there are days when this distance feels frustrating, and all we want is to return to our normal routine. I feel it too, especially when something happens, and my first instinct is to turn around and tell you about it. But I believe the joy of being reunited will make all this waiting feel worthwhile. Good morning, my love.
  • My darling wife, I was thinking about how wonderful it’ll feel to pick you up from the airport and finally see you walking towards me. I already know I’ll be smiling like a fool and trying not to embarrass myself with how excited I am. Until that beautiful moment arrives, I’ll keep counting down and imagining our first hug. Good morning, baby.
  • Good morning, my heart. Sometimes, I wish I could send you the smell of my morning coffee and the warmth of my hugs through this phone. I’d love for you to feel like you’re right here beside me, even if it’s only for a moment. Since I can’t do that, I’ll keep sending messages and calling whenever I can. I miss you so much.
  • My love, being married to you from a distance has taught me how important the little things are. A quick message during lunch, a surprise phone call or a picture of something funny can completely turn my day around. Thank you for finding ways to make me feel included in your life even when we’re far apart. Good morning, my beautiful wife.
  • Good morning, my queen. I hope you never feel like you have to hide your difficult days from me just because we’re not physically together. If something is bothering you, I want to hear about it, even if all I can do is listen and offer encouragement. You’re my wife, my best friend and my partner, no matter how many miles separate us and I want to be there for you. I love you.
  • Sweetheart, I woke up this morning wishing I could roll over and pull you into my arms. Instead, I reached for my phone because sending you a message is the closest thing I have to saying good morning in person. I hope these words make you feel a little closer to me. I love you, darling, and I miss you terribly.
  • Good morning, my beautiful wife. I know we’re both making sacrifices right now, and I don’t take your patience or understanding for granted. Every day apart reminds me how much I value the life we’re working towards together. I hope we can look back on this season someday and feel proud of how we supported each other through it.
  • My darling, I can’t wait for the day when we no longer have to calculate time differences or plan our conversations around busy schedules. I want to wake up, turn towards you and say good morning without needing a phone or an internet connection. Until that becomes our reality again, I’ll treasure every opportunity we get to talk. Have a lovely day, sweetheart.
  • Good morning, my sunshine. If I could make one wish today, it would be to spend an ordinary morning with you, doing absolutely nothing special. We’d make breakfast, watch something silly on television, and probably fall asleep on the couch together. I miss those peaceful moments more than any fancy date or expensive holiday. I can鈥檛 wait to be back in your arms.
  • My love, I hope you know that even when we go hours without speaking because life gets busy, you’re never far from my thoughts. I’ll see something that reminds me of you, hear a song you love or remember one of your funny jokes and immediately start smiling. You’re part of my everyday life in ways distance could never erase. Good morning, my darling wife.
  • Good morning, my forever girl. One day, this period of waking up in separate beds and saying goodnight through phone screens will be a memory we talk about while lying beside each other. We’ll remember how much we missed each other and how hard we worked to stay connected. Until then, I’ll keep loving you, choosing you and looking forward to every moment that brings us closer to being together again.
  • Wake up, my sleeping beauty. If kisses could travel through phone screens, you’d be waking up to a thousand of them right now. Until I can hold you again, know that every beat of my heart belongs to you. Have a great day today.
  • Sweetheart, I wish I could be there to kiss your forehead and slowly wake you up. I’d make you your favourite breakfast and listen to you tell me everything you’re looking forward to today. Even when we’re apart, those ordinary moments with you are what I miss the most. Good morning, my beautiful wife, and I can’t wait until we’re together again.

5 Nigerians on Finding Out They Were the Backup Partner /ships/nigerians-realising-backup-partner/ Wed, 14 Oct 2026 16:01:03 +0000 /?p=386061 Ever wondered what it鈥檚 called when someone acts like they鈥檙e into you, strings you along and refuses to commit? In modern dating, it鈥檚 called benching.

We spoke to five Nigerians about their experiences, from the man who used someone as his practice babe to the woman who discovered her situationship was getting married to someone else. Here鈥檚 what they said.

鈥淚 found out about her wedding on WhatsApp鈥 鈥 James*, 31, M

In mid-2024, a new neighbour moved into my compound. I thought she was stunning and tried to pursue a relationship with her. But she needed some time to think about it because she鈥檇 just come out of one. While I waited for her to decide, we became intimate, and she spent more time in my apartment than hers. I cooked for her, turned on my generator if she needed to work, and even installed fibre Wi-Fi because she complained that her network was weaker at my place. Everyone in our compound knew something was going on between us.

By December, she said she was travelling home to visit her parents, and I even gave her some money for transport. Then, lo and behold, I saw pictures and videos from her traditional wedding on her WhatsApp status. I was shocked. I tried to reach her for an explanation, but she never responded.

The last time I saw her was when she came with her sisters to move her belongings. I walked past without saying a word.

鈥淚 almost switched religions for my crush鈥 鈥 Jessica*, 29, F

I met a guy at the beach in 2022, and we had instant chemistry. He told me he really liked me but couldn鈥檛 see us dating because he was Muslim and I was Christian.  But I was willing to convert. When I told him, he seemed excited and even offered to take me through the process.

A few weeks later, before I could settle into my new decision, he鈥檇 married someone else and posted the photos everywhere. I was hurt and told him off for leading me on. But he insisted he hadn鈥檛 been leading me on and said he鈥檇 planned to take me as his second wife. I almost cursed him. Instead, I blocked him and deleted his number.

鈥淪he wanted me on standby while she searched for her spec鈥 鈥 Chuka*, 52, M

After my first marriage ended in my late 30s, I wasn鈥檛 in a hurry to settle down again. So when I met a woman at a friend’s birthday party in 2015, I wanted to take things slowly. We started talking regularly, and grew close over time.

After a few months, I asked if she wanted us to pursue a serious relationship. She said she liked me but wanted to be sure I was the right man for her. I thought that was reasonable.

As the months passed, however, I noticed she was happy to enjoy the benefits of having a partner without committing to me. Whenever she needed help, I was the first person she called. But if I suggested taking things further, she鈥檇 suddenly become uncomfortable.

Eventually, she told me she鈥檇 found someone else who was a better match for her. She still wanted us to remain close because she valued our friendship, but I told her that wouldn鈥檛 work for me. I wished her well and moved on.

鈥淪he kept her boyfriend a secret from me鈥 鈥 Elizabeth*, 28, F

I met a beautiful girl at a sip and paint party in 2024, and we kissed before the night ended. I liked her so much that I felt as though she鈥檇 used a love potion on me.

The following week, I asked her to be my girlfriend, but she said she didn鈥檛 want us to rush things. We spoke on the phone every day, and I visited her a few times. At some point, I told my friends about her and started planning an elaborate way to ask her out again.

All those plans flew out the window when I ran into her at a mutual friend鈥檚 party with a guy I later found out was her new boyfriend. When I confronted her, she said she liked me a lot, but she wasn鈥檛 ready to date a girl. She asked me if we could still be close, but I never responded.

鈥淗e used our conversations as practice for his new babe鈥 鈥 Jolade*, 27, F

When I was in my third year at university, my crush noticed me out of the blue. One afternoon,  he offered to walk me back to my hostel after class, and over the course of a few weeks, we grew close. He鈥檇 text me and ask personal questions about what I liked in a partner and what girls really wanted in a man. Sometimes, we鈥檇 sit outside my hostel for hours just talking.

He always seemed genuinely curious about my interests, so I assumed he liked me too. So you can imagine my surprise when he hard-launched his relationship with another girl on his social media. I felt blindsided and asked why he got so close to me if he planned to date someone else. This foolish boy told me our conversations had given him the confidence to approach the babe he really liked. I was so annoyed that I blocked his number.

Sunken Ships: My Husband Got Another Woman Pregnant Because I Wouldn鈥檛 Risk My Life for a Son /ships/husband-got-another-woman-pregnant-wouldnt-risk-life-for-son/ Sun, 11 Oct 2026 12:08:43 +0000 /?p=385840 Sunken Ships is a 糖心原创 weekly series that explores the how and why of the end of all relationships 鈥 familial, romantic or just good old friendships.

When Bukola* (43) married Bolaji* (50), they planned to have four children. But after a difficult third pregnancy, their doctor advised them to stop. Bukola was happy with their three children, two girls and a boy. Bolaji, however, insisted on having another son, even if it meant putting her health at risk.

For this week鈥檚 Sunken Ships, she shares how his insistence turned into betrayal and where they stand seven years after their separation.

How did you and Bolaji meet?

We met in 2005 at my aunt鈥檚 shop, where I worked as a salesgirl. He came almost every day to buy snacks, and we grew close. He was funny, but he also had an air of seriousness that I liked. I eventually developed a crush on him.

Sounds cute. When did your relationship officially start?

We continued as friends for a few months. Then, one day, he came to the shop when I was alone and confessed that he had been coming every day because he was interested in me. I was so shy that I initially dismissed him, but he persisted and spent the next few weeks courting me with promises of marriage and a happy future.

He asked me out again later that year, and we became an item. We kept our relationship secret at first because I didn鈥檛 want my aunt to think I was using my job as an excuse to follow men around. He met my aunt and the rest of my family in December of 2005, and we got married in August the following year.

What were the early years of your marriage like?

They were completely different from what I鈥檇 imagined. It wasn鈥檛 a bed of roses, but we had each other. Bolaji worked as a manager at a supermarket, while I opened my own provisions shop.

When we had our first child in 2007, I was elated. It felt like I was finally getting the family I had always imagined. Then we had two more children in 2009 and 2012.

We鈥檇 originally planned to have four children, but during my last pregnancy, I developed high blood pressure. It took a toll on my health, and our doctor advised us to stop having children. By then, we already had two girls and a boy, and I was happy with the size of our family. But Bolaji鈥檚 attitude towards us changed after that.

What do you mean?

He became distant and started spending more time away from home. Our easy banter disappeared, and we stopped having sex.

I suspected he was keeping a mistress and tried to talk to him. I asked what I could do to get him to focus on our family again. To my surprise, he said he
wanted us to have another child.

I reminded him of the doctor鈥檚 warning and the risk to my health, but he insisted he鈥檇 always wanted two sons. If I couldn鈥檛 give him what he wanted, he told me to leave him alone.

Oh no. How did you react to this?

I spoke to my in-laws and some of my family members, hoping they could persuade him to change his mind. He would agree with them and promise that things were fine, but once we were back home, he鈥檇 insist that we keep trying.

A part of me wanted to make him happy and grant his desire, but I was afraid. What if I didn鈥檛 survive the pregnancy? What if we went through with it and the baby wasn鈥檛 a boy? I didn鈥檛 want to take that chance.

The more I refused, the more Bolaji spent time away from home. He eventually stopped giving me money, so I had to rely on my shop’s proceeds to cover our children’s expenses.

It wasn鈥檛 an ideal situation, but I was willing to endure it until things got better between us. And the matter dragged on over the years. Then, in 2019, my sister brought me news that changed everything.

Tell me about that.

Bolaji got someone pregnant. It was heartbreaking news. I鈥檇 done my best to be a good wife to him and tolerated so many things just to keep our home together. Yet, he still betrayed me.

I reported the matter to our family, and they called a meeting. My in-laws begged me to forgive him and accept the pregnant woman as my junior wife. But I didn鈥檛 want to be a part of a polygamous family, so I refused.

What happened after that?

I insisted that Bolaji move out of our house, and he agreed. He got a new place for himself and the other woman. But when she gave birth to a girl, it was as if he flipped a switch. He abandoned her, too.

When I heard the news, I wanted to be happy and mock her, but what was there to celebrate? It wasn鈥檛 as if Bolaji had come back to me.

Fair enough. Where do things stand between you and Bolaji now?

Our children are the only thing connecting us. I want them to have a good relationship with their father, so I make sure they see him as much as possible. I also regularly update him on their progress, but aside from that, we live separate lives now.

The only thing that has improved is that he now gives us more financial support.

Do you think there鈥檚 a chance for reconciliation?

I鈥檓 not sure. I don鈥檛 know if I can ever completely forgive him for betraying me and getting another woman pregnant. He broke our vows and our home. It鈥檚 possible that God will touch Bolaji鈥檚 heart one day and he returns to our family, but I鈥檓 not holding out hope.

Has this experience affected the way you view marriage?

Yes, I don鈥檛 think marriage is a do-or-die affair. If anyone tries to force you to make a sacrifice for a marriage that could harm you, run away.

My Friend Took Care of My Baby So I Could Remember Who I Was /ships/friend-took-care-baby-remember-who-i-was/ Thu, 08 Oct 2026 19:35:09 +0000 /?p=385714 Blessing Smith had a smooth pregnancy, but postpartum came with pain, sleepless nights and the feeling that she couldn鈥檛 take her eyes off her baby. With her mum and mother-in-law unable to join her in Canada, her husband and friends stepped in with care she hadn鈥檛 even known she needed.

Four months into motherhood, she shares how that support changed her understanding of friendship and how she wants to show up for other mums.

The first time Demilade* came to my house after dropping her children at school, she didn鈥檛 bring food or a gift. She came to take care of my baby.

I remember watching her do it for the first time; I cried.

Before I became a mum, I always assumed I understood what it meant to support a new mother. But during my pregnancy, my friends completely rewired my thinking. They constantly checked on me, sent me suya when I had cravings and even cooked meals I could freeze before my delivery. I felt so cared for that I didn鈥檛 think there was anything else I needed.

My pregnancy journey was so smooth that I sometimes worried something was wrong. Where was the morning sickness they taught us about? What about the dizziness? Whenever I went for a scan, I worried they鈥檇 tell me the baby was no longer there because I barely felt any adverse symptoms.

Thankfully, everything was fine. I enjoyed the experience, took lots of pictures and videos, and romanticised my pregnancy journey.

Then the baby arrived, and everything changed.

The moment the doctors and nurses placed my baby in my hands, my brain switched. It was no longer about me; I now had the responsibility of making sure this little person was okay, no matter what.

My mum and mother-in-law couldn鈥檛 come to Canada for omugwo because their visas were rejected. And that was my first source of worry. Their absence meant my husband and I would have to figure it out all on our own.

Thankfully, my mother-in-law鈥檚 friend was visiting her daughter in Canada at the time. She stayed with us for two weeks, helped care for the baby and taught me some of the things I needed to know as a new mum.

Those first days were difficult. I was in so much pain and could barely bend. My husband would change my disposable postpartum pads for me and apply lotion to my legs because I couldn鈥檛 reach them myself. I was barely thinking about myself in those days, so having someone notice what I needed meant a lot.

Sleep was another issue. I barely closed my eyes during the first few weeks. Even though my husband offered to take over the night feeds, I couldn鈥檛 relax knowing someone else had the baby. I felt like I had to keep watching.

Eventually, during one of my postpartum appointments,  my doctor encouraged me to let my husband handle the nights while I slept in another room. It was difficult at first. Whenever I heard the baby cry, my body would wake up automatically. I had to remind myself that my husband cared about our baby, too.

After a while, I started sleeping through the night. I鈥檇 wake up, bathe, have breakfast and take over from my husband feeling rested.

My friends also kept showing up. They visited, brought gifts and cooked for me. For almost a month, I didn鈥檛 have to cook from scratch because there was enough food in the fridge.

But Demilade showed me a kind of support I hadn鈥檛 imagined.

She has two daughters, so she鈥檚 been exactly where I am now. After dropping them at school, she鈥檇 come over and spend about two hours with the baby and me. She鈥檇 feed the baby, put her to sleep, and ask me to do whatever I needed to do.

I knew about people bringing food, buying gifts, and visiting a new mum. I just
hadn鈥檛 imagined someone could come over to simply take the baby off my hands for a while.

Demilade could have used those hours for herself, but she chose to spend them helping me. I wasn鈥檛 entitled to her time, and she didn鈥檛 have to do it. But because she did, I suddenly had extra time for myself. I could keep up with my content creation. I edited my videos, worked on other things, or simply rested while someone I trusted cared for my baby.

She was constantly reminding me that I could still do the things I enjoyed before the baby. Once, she organised a mums鈥 night out with another friend. We left our children with our husbands and went out to have fun. I got home past midnight.

Of course, my mind was still with the baby, but I returned feeling energised. For the first time since giving birth, I felt like I remembered who I was.

Demilade didn鈥檛 just tell me to take a break. She helped make it happen because she knew that as a new mum, I could keep sacrificing the things I enjoyed.

Another friend also surprised me by remembering the exact day my baby clocked three months. She showed up with gifts, and I felt so seen and blessed.聽

People tend to pull back once the excitement around a new baby wears off, so the fact that she remembered three months later blew my mind.

Now, my baby is four months old, and motherhood keeps giving me new reasons to appreciate my friends.

I want to be more intentional about being present, anticipating their needs and making motherhood just a little bit easier to handle. When more of them become mums, I want to give them the kind of support Demilade gave me. Recently, I thanked a friend who came to my baby鈥檚 naming with her own four-month-old.

Before, I might not have thought much about the effort it took to show up. Now I understand it differently. She was navigating her own new mum life and still thought about me.

I want to show up for my friends in ways that have made this journey easier for me. I鈥檝e told my husband that if someone calls me for omugwo, I鈥檓 capable.

Because I now know what it feels like to need help, and I want to give that help to someone else.
