If you haven鈥檛 noticed already, typical Nigerian offices are mini Nigerian governments 鈥 everyone鈥檚 trying their darnedest to be the top players of the game.
To play office politics and win, you need a particular set of skills, and we鈥檝e got you.
Embrace passive-aggressiveness
God forbid you鈥檙e upset and are actually upfront about it. You want to lose your job? It doesn鈥檛 matter if Amaka asks you for a document you鈥檝e already sent 200 times before, or your oga keeps fixing pointless meetings. Hug passive-aggressiveness. It鈥檒l save you.
Just smile
Especially if you have nothing to be happy about. Do you want to be accused of having 鈥渓ow energy鈥?
Do oversabi once in a while
Forget whatever you believe. Eye service is very important in a Nigerian workplace. How else do you want to show you carry the work on your head?
Learn to keep quiet
You want to be visible, not known as the office 鈥渞adio without battery鈥.
鈥nd mind your business
Don鈥檛 go about announcing how you saw oga looking for ants inside his secretary鈥檚 mouth, or how Banke was watching 鈥Blood and Water鈥 with office WiFi.聽
But not all the time sha
Not when you need people to know you helped oga prepare the presentation everyone鈥檚 raving about. Blow other people鈥檚 trumpet too. Everyone likes whoever makes them feel good.
It鈥檚 all in the balance
Be serious, but not too serious. Your boss needs to know you鈥檙e working, but your colleagues shouldn鈥檛 hate you for being too excellent. Figure it out.
Keep your personality at home
If you鈥檙e an introvert, better borrow a sprinkle of extraversion when it鈥檚 time for work. If you鈥檙e an extrovert, learn to hold your mouth small. You don鈥檛 want your superiors to think you鈥檙e hoarding the spotlight.
And finally, don’t care about money
Because aren鈥檛 you working because of 鈥減assion鈥? Don鈥檛 join others to agitate for a salary increase. Even if you get promoted, don鈥檛 even mention salary. Use the 鈥渆mployee of the year鈥 award you鈥檒l get after following these rules to buy bread at the market.
