Saturday Night Live UK Showed Us Exactly How To Make Jokes About Nigerians /pop/saturday-night-live-nigerian-wicked/ Tue, 27 Oct 2026 11:36:03 +0000 /?p=386886 On 25 October, Saturday Night Live UK released a sketch parodying Wicked as an early-2000s Nollywood production, with Cynthia Erivo as Glinda, a flip of her role in the films, and Ayoade Bamgboye, as Elphaba. Draped in the fluffiest wigs and their best eyeliner, the pair travel to the city of LagOz to find the wizard in an apartment styled like a wealthy Igbo man鈥檚 home. The leans into the campy, high-energy visuals of Nollywood trailers from that era, and it does so with obvious affection.

Old Nollywood has long shaped internet culture, from the Aki na Ukwa memes to the TikTok sounds lifted from our movies to the old Nollywood parties everyone seems to be hosting. Yet comedy about Nigerians has rarely tapped into that well of humour. We鈥檝e remained the butt of the joke, with variations of the 鈥淣igerian prince鈥 played for stale laughs, as recently as , a Nickelodeon movie.

That is what makes this Saturday Night Live UK sketch stand out in the sea of mediocre Nigerian humour from foreign media. It pays homage to the culture it parodies, drawing on the era鈥檚 absurdity and acknowledging its cultural power. Its strength is in the details: the sound effects between scenes, the dramatic voice narrating the trailer, the moment Glinda and Elphaba almost kiss before turning their heads away, and the Bailey鈥檚 Irish cream served at the Wizard鈥檚 home, a drink Nigerian hosts bring out at every occasion.

Saturday Night Live UK

The comedy works because of how popular these movies were in African and Caribbean communities, and because of Cynthia鈥檚 history with the Wicked films, especially the conversations about her chemistry with Ariana Grande during the press tour. The result is a Saturday Night Live UK sketch that laughs with us, not at us. It celebrates our movie culture without leaning on stereotypes, and it鈥檚 a reminder that specificity gets bigger laughs than the old stereotype ever did.

Zlatan is Getting Married: A Timeline of Zlatan and Davita鈥檚 Relationship聽 /pop/zlatan-relationship-timeline/ Fri, 23 Oct 2026 17:19:32 +0000 /?p=386767 When Zlatan dropped Zanku in 2018, we didn鈥檛 know that seven years later he would 鈥済be body鈥 with the love of his life, Davita. The couple have been deep in wedding season for weeks now, with pictures and videos dropping regularly in anticipation of their nuptials on Saturday.

If you have been looking for a timeline of their relationship, we have you covered.

Zlatan and Davita

How They Met

In an on YouTube, Zlatan shared that at the start of his career he was focused on looking for what to eat instead of chasing women and you know he鈥檚 serious because he has two songs titled CashApp and Paypal.聽

On his first trip to London, he was trying to figure out the banking system because as we already established, he doesn鈥檛 play about his money, when he asked a friend to come help him. The friend came with Davita and it was love at first sight for the 鈥Sweet In The Middle鈥 crooner.聽

What we didn鈥檛 know is despite all the swagger and energy on stage, Zlatan is a very shy man and he asked his friend for Davita鈥檚 contact instead of asking her directly.

She started showing him the ropes in London, driving him to Corchester in her small car and spending hours on the phone with him. She shared that she was wary of dating a celebrity but Zlatan made her feel safe and as a bonus, he said 鈥淚 love you鈥 first. After singing Odeshi, the man couldn鈥檛 form hard guy at all.

The First Son

Most of the relationship has been away from the spotlight but in 2020 they announced the arrival of their first son, Toluwalase Shiloh Ainoghena Omoniyi, taking their relationship from two people building a romance to a young family. We鈥檝e seen glimpses of the son, with the boy participating in the cutest promo content for his brand and also doing the voice over for their wedding announcement video.

The Second Son

By 2024, the mostly private couple welcomed a second son, Benaiah Oluwaseyi Tan Amanosi Omoniyi, to their family. Their family grew again and they continued to show up at each other鈥檚 events as supportive partners.

You already know Nigerians were yapping about their marital status because they couldn鈥檛 fathom two people building a family without getting married.

The Marriage

Earlier this year, rumours about their marriage began to circulate but Zlatan shut them down in a now deleted story on Snapchat after a fan asked him how his wife was doing saying, 鈥淪he鈥檚 the mother of my kids, but she鈥檚 not my wife yet, she鈥檚 fine.鈥

By March, the couple appeared in photos wearing what seemed to be matching wedding rings and trust us to start zooming in to pictures searching for their rings. Davita added fuel to the fire by adding Zlatan鈥檚 surname, Omoniyi, to her Instagram username.

Final confirmation came when an event planner shared pictures of the couple at the private ceremony.

Since then, the couple has gone on to share a wedding announcement video with a date set for October 23rd and we can鈥檛 wait for their love story to continue.

10 Times a Guest Feature Turned an Upcoming Artist Into a Superstar /pop/guest-features-turned-upcoming-into-a-superstar/ Fri, 16 Oct 2026 08:42:43 +0000 /?p=386025 In the fast-moving ecosystem of popular music, talent can earn you a seat in the waiting room, but the right guest verse kicks the door off its hinges. The high-profile feature is one of music鈥檚 most potent catalysts: an intentional cultural baton-pass where an established act lends their voice, hard-earned credibility, fan base and institutional momentum to an underdog on the cusp.

Whether it鈥檚 Olamide running his finishing school for diamonds in the rough, Zlatan plugging his hyperactive battery into a fresh voice, or pop royalty assembling to turn an already buzzing single into an inescapable hit, these collaborations represent decisive moments of ignition. These are ten career-defining launches that transformed  underground promises into household brands.

1. 鈥鈥 鈥 Zlatan feat. Olamide (2017)

Zlatan had been working the underground for years, but 鈥淢y Body鈥, with Olamide on it, was when the wider country noticed him. This was before he patented the Zanku dance and made exuberant ad-libs the industry鈥檚 favorite currency. Olamide鈥檚 verse on the song transitioned it overnight from a gritty neighborhood hopeful into a certified Lagos anthem, laying the bedrock for Zlatan鈥檚 late-2010s street-hop dominance.

2. 鈥鈥 feat. Olamide & Poco Lee (2021)

鈥淶aZoo Zehh鈥 was a single before the big names showed up. It caught the ears of Poco Lee, who introduced Portable to Olamide. The link ended up with a version with both of them. Olamide cuts through the song with an indelible braggadocious verse, and delivers the undisputed hit and soundtrack of Detty December 2021.

3. 鈥鈥 鈥 Ayo Maff feat. Fireboy DML (2024)

Emerging from the trenches of Bariga with a raspy pen and an innate gift for chronicling youth survival, Ayo Maff had already built localised buzz, but 鈥淒ealer鈥 gave his street gospel mainstream wings. Fireboy DML鈥檚 name gave the song a bigger room to be heard in. Even his verse is great: an emotive and rich narrative that set the track apart from Ayo Maff鈥檚 regular street-hop fare.

4. 鈥鈥 鈥 Asake feat. Olamide (2022)

Asake had some buzz already, with “Mr. Money” (2020) and nods from internet personalities like Broda Shaggi and Tunde Ednut. The 鈥淢r. Money鈥 buzz died down and Asake was quiet until 2022 when he had a sudden explosion with 鈥淥mo Ope.鈥 Magicsticks鈥 kinetic, violin-laced amapiano production stuck with Olamide鈥檚 cool-headed and self-assured verse.

Their chemistry was so instantaneous and the groove so undeniable that it resulted in Asake signing to YBNL, kicking off one of the most dominant, record-shattering chart runs any African artist has ever achieved.

5. 鈥鈥 鈥 BNXN (FKA Buju) feat. Zlatan (2019)

This is the rare feature the internet demanded. A friend filmed himself mimicking Zlatan鈥檚 ad-libs over Buju’s unreleased song, the clip spread, and the crowd pushed until Zlatan, the then-hottest hitmaker in the country, got on it. Zlatan obliged and gave his trademark Zanku bounce over Buju鈥檚 laid-back cadence. The 2019 song earned him a 鈥楬eadies Rookie of the Year鈥 nomination, and he became the first artist signed to Burna Boy鈥檚 Spaceship Records.

6. 鈥鈥 鈥 Bella Shmurda feat. Olamide (2019)

The song is a hustler鈥檚 complaint about broken government promises, bad economy and heavy family expectations. Olamide followed the theme and dropped a rap verse about economic anxiety and survival. In fact, it鈥檚 Baddo鈥檚 most passionate, razor-sharp remix verses to date.

7. 鈥鈥 鈥 Kizz Daniel feat. Tiwa Savage & Davido (2015)

While the original 鈥淲oju鈥 had already made Kiss Daniel (as he was then known) a household name. Assembling Davido and Tiwa Savage at the heights of their respective reigns was a staggering flex for an emerging act on an independent label. It was a cosign and a remix that solidified Daniel鈥檚 transition from a potential one-hit wonder to an enduring Afropop heavyweight.

8. 鈥鈥 鈥 Zinoleesky feat. Zlatan (2019)

Throughout 2019, Zinoleesky built his name with social media freestyles with his friend Lil Frosh and his clips generated millions of views, but breaking past the confines of Instagram remained an uphill battle. Zlatan, then at the absolute zenith of his reign as a guest artist, jumped on 鈥淢oney鈥 to support a then-budding street-hop artist. He gave a feature that took Zinoleesky鈥檚 earnest songwriting out of phone speakers and planted it firmly onto mainstream airwaves and club sound systems.

9. 鈥鈥 鈥 Mavo feat. Ayra Starr, Zlatan & Shallipopi (2025)

After the release of the original with WAVE$TAR came in June 2025, it notifiedlisteners that a new kid on the block has something to offer. The remix, 鈥淓scaladizzy II鈥, followed in August with Shallipopi, Zlatan and Ayra Starr, and properly pushed him into the limelight. Pulling together three distinct Afropop powerhouses couldn鈥檛 be ignored. The song went from a nich茅 and TikTok jam to an unmissable crossover moment.

10. 鈥鈥 feat. Bhadboi OML (2024)

Before FOLA took over streaming charts, he was slowly building an underground catalogue, but pairing up with Bhadboi OML gave the spark required for mainstream attention. The song thrives on moody, melodic mid-tempo Afro-fusion, centering longing, romance and vulnerability. Bhadboi OML, already revered for his emotive street-soul storytelling and distinct cadence, provided notable street validation. The feature pushed the song into a relentless viral sensation across TikTok and digital platforms, and it introduced FOLA as one of 2024鈥檚 freshest breakout voices

10 FOLA Songs Every Woman Is Listening To Right Now /pop/10-fola-songs-every-woman-is-listening-to-right-now/ Mon, 12 Oct 2026 16:00:31 +0000 /?p=385860 Since he stepped into the limelight, has made room for himself in Afrobeats. He does it by laying his unguarded emotions over smooth, slow-burning rhythms.

On acclaimed projects like what a feeling, Catharsis and 9, he turns introspective experiences and romantic confessions into melodies that pull you in, sometimes bringing along high-profile collaborators. I made a list of his ten essential tracks.

10. 鈥鈥 (2024)

This song is from FOLA鈥檚 what a feeling EP. Over a warm, mid-tempo backdrop, he balances vulnerability, offering a supportive shoulder while navigating the bittersweet push-and-pull of romantic farewells, with a catchy bounce.

9. 鈥鈥 (2026)

Before FOLA released his sophomore album, 9, he led with singles like this song, 鈥渁ttention!鈥 It flips FOLA鈥檚 tender style a bit into uptempo, street-ready song. Driven by hypnotic drum patterns and an undeniable vocal swagger, the song demands instant focus as FOLA commandeers with charisma and catchy melodics.

8. 鈥鈥 feat. BNXN (2024)

FOLA elevates this fan-favourite song adding  BNXN who brings his signature honeyed hooks into FOLA鈥檚 world of introspective solitude. Together, they turn romantic tales of unreturned messages and longing into a melancholic hit that serves both the lovers and the singles.

7. 鈥鈥 feat. Ayra Starr (2026)

Here, we have one of the most distinct voices in Afropop. 鈥渢reat u right鈥 pairs FOLA with Ayra Starr for a romantic pop song. They float over a sun-drenched production, as they sing sweet exchanges centered on unconditional affection and royal treatment.

6. 鈥鈥 (2025)

This is a laid-back Afro-fusion jam, stacked with percussion and smooth synth lines. FOLA glides across the beat with cool composure, singing a deserving tribute to  the magnetic beauty of his lover.

5. 鈥鈥 (2025)

His catharsis album is introspective and of its tracks, 鈥渃aricature鈥 is one of the best showcases of FOLA鈥檚 lyrical perspective and knack for storytelling. Over percussion and subtle synth work, he explores themes of authenticity and superficiality.

4. 鈥鈥 feat. Davido (2026)

Building on their chemistry from earlier collaborations, FOLA and Davido make a moody, jet-setting late-night song. The track captures the thrill of international nightlife while involved in romance in the early morning hours.

3. 鈥鈥 feat. Kizz Daniel (2025)

FOLA and Kizz Daniel sing about being completely swept off one鈥檚 feet. The chemistry between them is effortless. FOLA comes with his silky vocals and Kizz Daniel brings the harmonies that creates a mid-tempo song that turns romantic disorientation into a sweet listening experience.

This Suicide Prevention Month, Nollywood Should Look At How It Tells These Stories /pop/nollywood-suicide-stories-care/ Wed, 30 Sep 2026 12:09:39 +0000 /?p=385086 Suicidal imagery runs deep in Nollywood’s comic vocabulary. One of the most popular WhatsApp stickers is a frame of Nkem Owoh, eyes wet, looping a rope around his neck 鈥 a morbid image co-opted for humour and slight inconvenience in casual conversation. It’s a small, telling symptom of a bigger problem: an industry that has never quite figured out how to treat mental illness and suicide with the weight they deserve.

Nollywood has long treated mental illness as a consequence rather than a condition. A man runs mad because a ritual backfired; a woman strips in the street and laughs because she cheated on her husband. The afflicted character is usually assigned a set of stock tics 鈥 an unsettling laugh, a public breakdown 鈥 and a single spiritual cause, with no room for treatment or interiority. It’s either a cautionary tale (“don’t do this or you will run mad”) or comic relief, and either way, the audience leaves with a worse understanding of mental illness than they came in with.

That same carelessness carries over into how the industry handles suicide, arguably its most delicate subject. Rather than sitting with the decision 鈥 the mind behind it, the weight of it 鈥 suicide is deployed as shock value, a twist that serves the plot rather than the character. You can see it in the short film Behind The Smile: the director takes a genuinely complex subject and strips it of depth, driving the character to an ending that feels less like a culmination than an afterthought. A beat dispatched with the same flatness as any other scene, rather than the film’s emotional center of gravity.

A few films manage to break from this. is the clearest example. It follows the aftermath of a woman’s complicated pregnancy and her struggle with postpartum depression, and it earns the difficulty of that subject rather than borrowing it for effect. The film gives its lead a full interior life: her isolation is shown in small, accumulating domestic details rather than a single dramatic outburst, and her husband’s failure to see what’s happening to her is treated as its own quiet indictment. It never tips into public-service-announcement territory because it trusts the character’s specific circumstances to carry the weight, instead of leaning on suicide as a narrative device.

As we close out Suicide Prevention Month, it’s worth remembering how much Nollywood’s stories shape public perception of mental illness and suicide. For a huge, non-specialist audience, these films may be the only sustained engagement they have with the subject at all. Movies don’t need to function as mental health advocates. But an industry with this much reach owes its subjects 鈥 and its audience 鈥 more care than a rope around the neck played for a laugh.

If you need support, someone to talk to, or immediate help, these Nigerian mental health resources may help.
